Who is right, Me or You?

Published on 22 June 2021 at 17:32

To question someone else’s belief in something is easy, so why then is it that questioning your own beliefs is much harder?

Think about it, you and your friend may be deep in a discussion about some topic dealing with Faith and God and Religion and you keep hitting him with a left hook upper jab combination. As soon as your friend lifts up his leg for a right kick you are on the ground at a loss for words because you were not expecting that kind of move.

Many people only study what they have grown up learning from their pastors imams and rabbis. They feel like how they were brought up as a kid is the only correct way in which one should understand the Bible. It’s funny then that if this is true, how is it that there isn’t ONE single religion out there that hasn’t changed their outlook on the Bible? Even the Jewish people whom started the whole Abrahamic tradition have a collection of writings called the Talmud. (The Talmud has many explanations of laws that were not fully explained in the Torah. And within the Talmud is commentary. And as we all know commentary absolutely has differing views and understandings in it.)

I have learned that if I were to claim to know the whole truth about God and the Bible and the origins of the universe I better be well prepared to defend that knowledge. And if someone gives a valid reason for how I am wrong I must accept it. But again why is it so difficult to admit defeat? Is it wired in our brains to be dominant in all situations? Does it go back to morality? My way is right and your way is wrong (morally) so therefore I am superior!

I personally have gone on what I think is one hell of a journey in my life when it comes to searching out truth. However others of coarse may say that I didn’t go very far on my journey at all. Just a short run though will get you caught up.

Lutheran christian 0-18

Agnostic Atheist 18-23

Theist 23-26

Messianic Jew 26-28

Torah Observant Man 28-31

As you can see I’m not quite middle aged yet and I have gone through many stages of belief in my life.

I have come to the conclusion that I need mostly to focus on myself. And not worry about others. However what annoys me and quite possibly many people who have taken the same road as me as well is that there are people out there who will be concerned with our souls. And will not let go even if you scrub with soap and water. These people just want the best for you and again they are just like you in that they think they are right and you are wrong. You can share with them every step of your journey and they will kindly blow it off and still tell you that you are mistaken

So let’s re-analyze the question I first brought up earlier.

To question someone else’s belief in something is easy, so why then is it that questioning your own beliefs is much harder?

I think the two big answers are peer pressure/tradition and lack of interest in finding out the truth.

Think of it in a musical perspective. Most people want to play their musical instrument for enjoyment and others well they want to analyze and learn the music theory. I belong to the music theory camp myself.
